Fear and anger both signal a threat, yet they push a decision in opposite directions. The difference lives not in how strong the feeling is but in how the mind sizes up the situation along a few specific dimensions. Two of them matter most: how certain the situation feels, and who or what is judged to be in control of it. Fear reads a situation as uncertain and controlled by circumstance. Anger reads the same situation as certain and controlled by another person. Same racing pulse, opposite readings, opposite choices.

Those readings carry forward into the next unrelated decision, which is the part most people miss. An emotion aroused by one event colors the appraisal of the next, and it does so through the dimension it happens to carry rather than through its pleasantness. A person made fearful becomes more pessimistic about risks across the board; a person made angry becomes more optimistic and more willing to act. The emotion has already answered the questions of certainty and control before deliberation begins, and the answer sticks.

This is why the reference point matters more than the raw figure. The mind codes results as gains or losses relative to a baseline, not in absolute terms. A salary, a price, a performance — each feels satisfying or dismal according to the expectation it is compared with. Shift the expectation and the identical outcome flips its emotional sign.
